The World Reimagined
Still We Rise
The Butterfly Effect
In 2022, Joanna was invited to design a globe as part of The World Reimagined, a national project dedicated to remembering and transforming the way we understand the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans and its legacy.
Jo’s south-at-top butterfly globe subverted traditional north orientated maps, and represented continents as markings on the wings of a butterfly as a metaphor for migration, freedom, metamorphosis and societal change.
The painted lady butterfly travels vast distances in cyclical migratory patterns, flying further than any other butterfly species.
Following exhibition in Swansea, and then Trafalgar Square, The Butterfly Effect is now on permanent display at The Swansea Museum.
